By NITZ ARANCON, Correspondent AN advancing mass of cold air spawned rains across Mindanao yesterday, and the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecast the bad weather to persist today. The downpours were a cause of worry in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental that suffered damages as a result of last month’s floods. Pagasa raised an “orange warning” in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis  Oriental, and Bukidnon at around 12:40 pm yesterday. “Kining nga lugara,  duna nay mga pagbaha  sa mga low-lying areas ug mga landslide, hinongdan nga atong gi-isa ang atong ‘orange’ level warning,” he said. It was a “red warning” in the Davao provinces,  Agusan provinces, Surigao provinces, and  Compostela  Valley because the rains there were really heavy and posed immediate threats. Pagasa said the rains that affected the whole of Mindanao were spawned by the tail-end of the cold front. Weather specialist Mario Goya said the same weather condition could persist till the weekend as an effect of the northeast monsoon and the easterly winds in the Pacific Ocean. Simply put, the bad weather is a result of the meeting of the mass of cold air, and warm air over the Pacific Ocean. Goya said the rains spawned by the tail-end of the cold front have also been affecting Davao  City, the Davao provinces,  Compostela Valley,  the Agusan provinces, the Surigao provinces, and  Bukidnon. Goya said that as the tail-end of the cold front advanced, rains started to pouring on Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro at around 10 pm on Wednesday. Classes were ordered suspended in public schools in Gingoog City by Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano due to heavy rains. The order covered elementary and high schools. Fernando Vincent Dy, chief of the Provincial  Disaster  Risk  Reduction Management Office, said some villages in Gingoog were flooded due to the continuous rains since Wednesday night. The capitol also alerted municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices in Misamis  Oriental, and directed them to closely coordinate with their provincial counterparts in case they need rescue equipment. In Cagayan de Oro, Mayor Oscar Moreno also suspended classes in public schools. Allan Porcadilla, City  Disaster Risk Reduction and Management  Department head, said barangay officials were also alerted. Porcadilla said city hall was alarmed because of heavy rains in the towns of Monolo Fortich,  Libona,  Baungon, and  Talakag in Bukidnon.
