NEWBORNS now have a chance of a running start in life ― figuratively speaking, that is.

Vice Mayor Jocelyn B. Rodriguez filed a proposed ordinance titled “An Ordinance Institutionalizing Newborn Screening in Cagayan de Oro City,” submitting it to the City Secretary on April 23. This is based on the Republic Act 9288, also known as “Newborn Screening Act of 2004.”

“I champion this ordinance by highlighting our dedication to upholding fundamental human rights, ilabina ang right to health sa atong mga katawhan” she added.

She said that by institutionalizing newborn screening, the city would be taking proactive steps to detect and treat heritable conditions early on

Ipaniguro nato that every child o ang mga bag-ong natawo nga mga kabataan ma-protektahan gayud,” Rodriguez said.

Comprehensive newborn screening protocols will be established if this ordinance is passed in the 20th City Council, safeguarding infants from potential health complications and empowering parents and guardians to make informed and knowledgeable decisions on their child’s health.

The groundwork for a sustainable and equitable newborn screening system prioritizing accessibility and quality care for all will be laid out by collaborating with healthcare professionals, government agencies, and stakeholders through the proposed ordinance.

This also includes disseminating accurate information to provide free screening services at government health facilities in Cagayan de Oro city.

Kini nga ordinance nag-reflect sa akong lig-on nga commitment to ensuring that no newborn child should be left behind,” Rodriguez said.

“Together, ubani ako ninyo in prioritizing the health and well-being of our community’s youngest members through the passage of my proposed ordinance. With initiatives like this, we’re building a brighter, healthier future for Cagayan de Oro City,” she added.
