During Meet the Press initiated by the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) in partnership with SM Downtown, aimed to address the concerns of the local workforce and inform the public about the government’s efforts in the labor sector.

Amid circulating rumors about TUPAD benefits being unfairly distributed, Director Vasallo clarified that the program is designed for all individuals who lack stable employment, such as vendors, farmers, senior citizens, and other disadvantaged groups.

He emphasized that government officials’ relatives and those with stable jobs are strictly prohibited from being beneficiaries of the TUPAD program.

Vasallo reassured that TUPAD beneficiaries would receive their full payment without any deductions, reinforcing DOLE’s commitment to fair labor practices.

He also addressed the concerns about wage increases across various establishments in the region.

According to Vasallo, the department is gradually implementing a wage order increase and urges business owners to comply with the new regulation to avoid complaints or potential sanctions.

Micro businesses that cannot afford the wage increase can apply for coverage under the Micro Business Enterprise category for exemption.

Regarding upcoming activities, Vasallo revealed that DOLE-10 is planning a series of events, including a fun run and potential partnerships with the province of Misamis Oriental for KADIWA, as well as a Workers Organization Development Program in collaboration with Del Monte.

While these plans are still being finalized, they represent the department’s proactive approach to enhancing worker welfare and development.

The press briefing also provided an opportunity for Vasallo to discuss the sources of TUPAD funds, emphasizing that they originate from the DOLE and not individual government officials.

This distinction is crucial in maintaining the integrity and transparency of the program, explained Vasallo.

In response to questions about salary increases and employee benefits, Vasallo reiterated that all employees are entitled to receive their full compensation during each pay period.

He stressed the importance of proper payroll practices and the necessity for establishments to fulfill their obligations to their workers.

Vasallo did not shy away from addressing workplace harassment issues.

He assured that every employee, regardless of gender, has the right to file complaints and seek redress.

He also provided information on maternity leave and benefits for solo parents, demonstrating DOLE’s commitment to supporting diverse employee needs.

The briefing with Director Vasallo was an informative session that highlighted DOLE-10’s dedication to addressing labor concerns, implementing fair employment practices, and supporting the workforce in the region.
