AT around 5:45 in the afternoon of Sept.3, 2015, my wife broke into our room and exclaimed, “Gang, sunog ilang, Raful!” The first thing that came to mind was to call up Bro. Nelson Sia who is a member of the Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade. I knew they will come.

The first to arrive was one from our local fire department. Soon enough, there were firefighters with more than 10 fire trucks trying to contain the fire.

It’s a block from my home and the firewall of the house where the fire originated helped prevent the spread of fire. But it did not stop my wife from gathering the important and valuable things and documents. Some neighbors brought their belongings to our place for safe keeping.

I’ve never seen such a quick response and so many firetrucks responding to an emergency. I saw two from Limketkai, two from Gaisano, two from Graphics, two from the Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade, one from the Nazareth sub-station, and the rest from our very own City Fire Department. My apologies if I missed others.

Not many years ago, we had a fire also near our house. But this time, it was different. I commend all of them for their bravery and sacrifice. Let me represent the people from our barangay by saying “thank you” from the bottom of our hearts!

I heard over the radio that more than half of the city barangay chairmen were in one place supposedly for the proclamation of Dongkoy Emano as mayoral candidate. Of course, Dongkoy is encouraged by feedback that many are angry at the present mayor, and they will no longer vote for him.

Oca Moreno’s supporters, on the other hand, are using the schools as his major accomplishments which Dongkoy didn’t do during his watch. Many suspect that these school buildings are overpriced.

I have asked a few architects and they said the price is too much. But COA’s technical division certified that the costs of the school buildings are even below their estimate. Really? But this will not put to rest the allegations of overpricing.

Issues against this administration are aplenty. The people around Moreno know them but are silent either because they also benefitted or for fear of losing their juicy positions. In a way, they are also guilty. Let history judge them.

Dongkoy may be hopeful but it doesn’t mean that those who no longer like Moreno will go for Dongkoy. No, not another nightmare! There has to be an alternative. Certainly, not Klarex Uy! Perhaps, Rufus Rodriguez but until today, he has not shown any interest.
••
Zaldy Ocon is in hot water and judging from criticisms by a reader, he may no longer be accepted by the Moreno camp.  Hapsay chair Egay Uy figured in an alleged hit-andun case. Minor or not, it’s still “hit and run” which is not good given his position.

Two incidents, days apart, are too much for this administration. But it is also predictable who the mayor will defend. Ocon is more controversial while Egay’s case may just be a lapse of judgment.

Their political enemies are feasting on their misfortunes. It’s time for Moreno’s men to be careful and prudent.
