By NITZ ARANCON Correspondent COUNCILOR George Goking yesterday warned that any attempt to rush committee work on the application of Limketkai and Sons Inc. to open a casino in the city would backfire, and could delay city council’s action on it. Goking said this even as he criticized Councilor Zaldy Ocon for calling for a hearing on the Limketkai application without the green light of Vice Mayor Rainier Joaquin Uy and other members of the city council. “Siya ra (Ocon) ang nagboot-boot sa pag-assign sa iyang committee sa dihang nag-apply ang Limketkai Center sa gambling casino. Foul na,” said Goking. Ocon is the chairman of the city council’s games and amusement committee that called for a hearing on the casino proposal on Friday. Goking said he sees Ocon’s move as an attempt to railroad, and that it was not the proper process. He warned that such action could delay the city council’s action on the proposal. “Dili maka first base sa plenary session sa city council.” Goking also said that if Ocon forces the issue, he would block moves by the games and amusement committee to bring the matter to the city council by including it in the local legislature’s agenda. “Being a member of committee on laws and rules, I will object, and recommend that any proposed measure [from Ocon’s committee] be referred back to vice mayor,” he said. Goking has earlier proposed that the public hearings be called by the city council acting as committee of the whole. He questioned what he said was Ocon’s haste in scheduling a public hearing without consulting other members of the city council. “Why he is in hurry? Unsa may iyang gidali-an”? Goking asked rhetorically. He pointed out that Vice Mayor Uy has yet to get hold of the Limketkai application. Uy is still in Europe. Ocon however said he is the acting vice mayor and so, he referred the application of the Limketkai group to the games and amusement committee which he chairs. He pointed out that the Limketkai’s request was made in Jan. 23. “It so happened that I am also the chairman of the committee,” Ocon said. Goking is a member of the committee on games and amusement but despite the notice of meeting on Friday, he did not show up. He explained that he had to attend a news conference on the upcoming Health Summit being organized by Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane.
