THE Roman Catholic Archdiocese has expressed its disappointment over Sen. Emmanuel Pacquiao’s position on the restoration of the death penalty, saying it was inconsistent with the Bible-wielding boxer turned politician’s Christian dogma.
Speaking for the local archdiocese, Fr. Juliano Retiquez said Pacquiao’s proposal to bring back capital punishment was also inconsistent with his pro-life advocacy.
“Subo kaayo kita kay si Manny Pacquiao, abi man nato kon pro-life siya, pero sa kalit lang, pabor na man siya sa death penalty. Na-inconsistent siya,” said Retiquez, parish priest of the Fatima Church in Camaman-an during the Forum on Social Issues at the Patrick Cronin hall here organized by the Social Action Center of the local Roman Catholic Archdiocese.
Retiquez, director of the Catholic faith defenders’ group and the Marian Crusade of the archdiocese, said he could not understand how Pacquiao could claim to be a “Born Again” Christian and favor the death penalty at the same time.
“Nia na man ta sa Christian era karon. So ang atong sundon ang mga pagtolon-an sa New Testament nga nag-ingon nga higugma-a ang imong kaaway ug ayaw pagpatay,” he said.
Carl Cabaraban, social action coordinator of the archdiocese, said Archbishop Antonio Ledesma has called for public fora about the proposed restoration of capital punishment so people would be guided amid the support the proposed death penalty restoration has been getting in Congress.
Vic Aleria, lawyer of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Region 10, said the Commission was uncompromising in its stand against the death penalty. He said the death penalty has proven to be a non-deterrent to crime in the country.
“If the Duterte administration restores the death penalty, it will be a big contrast to international laws,” said Aleria, pointing out that what should be done is to improve the administration of the country’s prison facilities.
“Unsa-on pagka usab sa kinaiya sa pinireso nga diha sa mga silda, na-a man kanang illegal drugs?” Aleria asked rhetorically.
