IN an advisory sent to this paper today, April 24, 2024, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced a yellow alert status for the Mindanao grid from 10:00AM to 4:00PM on the same day.

As per the advisory issued by Beth Ladaga from the Public Affairs Department of the NGCP Government Relations and Regional Affairs Division, the Mindanao grid has an available capacity of 2,761MW, with a peak demand reaching 2,614MW.

As of the time of the alert, nine plants are on forced outage since April 2024, with five others running on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 673.98MW of unavailable capacity to the grid.

The yellow alert status is raised when the operating margin is deemed insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

This situation underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between power supply and demand to ensure the stability and reliability of the grid.

NGCP reminded consumers to use electricity efficiently during the period of the yellow alert to help mitigate the strain on the grid.

They advised the public to conserve energy and practice responsible electricity consumption to avoid potential power interruptions or outages in the region.

The corporation according to Ladaga assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with power plant operators to address the challenges and ensure the continuous and reliable supply of electricity to the Mindanao grid.

They emphasized the need for cooperation from all stakeholders to help manage the power supply situation effectively.
