Xavier University–Ateneo de Cagayan held its annual Social Development Week recently with the theme “Urban Development: Social and Environmental Challenges and Opportunities.”

The week-long event featured several activities, such as a forum, selling booth, tree planting, and summit. The activities aimed to discuss and present the emerging opportunities and challenges that metropolization bring to the city.

The Forum on Metropolization: Social and Environmental Challenges and Opportunities served as the venue for discussion on the metropolization plans for Cagayan de Oro amid the construction of new roads and buildings and an influx of people pouring in and out of the city.

Aside from the Metropolization and Service Learning Summits, a World Bank Forum was organized for the “Regional Launch of the World Bank Philippines Economic Update October 2019”.

Present at the summit were University President Fr. Roberto Yap SJ, Dr. Kevin Chua of the World Bank, Ma. Teresa Alegrio from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, XU Economics Department Chairperson Caroline Laarni Serenas, and City Mayor Oscar Moreno.

Throughout the week, a Tagbuan booth was set up to sell fruits and vegetables harvested by XU’s partner beneficiaries from Barangay Langaon, Bukidnon, and the Manresa Farm.

The Social Development cluster of Xavier Ateneo has been conducting its Social Development Week for years now. The SD cluster “sets the directions for development initiatives aligned with the University’s mission and vision, as it continually strives to be a relevant player in the development of Mindanao, the Philippines and the Southeast Asian region.” (xu comms)
