Maj. Regie Go, 4th Infantry Division spokesman, said the soldiers found three firearms – two M16 rifles and a M4 carbin e— from the encounter site in Barangay Besigan.

Go said the soldiers also found the body of a suspected rebel after the 15-minute encounter.

“The terrorists withdrew, leaving behind their dead comrade,” said Go.

The encounter site is located about 50 kilometers from downtown Cagayan de Oro.

Go said Besigan residents informed authorities of the presence of about 10 NPA rebels who came down from the hills asking for food.

He said the information was relayed to an Army platoon of the 65th Infantry Battalion that was conducting security operations nearby.

Barangay Besigan is only three kilometers from Barangay Tignapoloan where the city government launched the Cagayan de Oro City Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict on Friday.
