SINCE majority of the new Covid-19 cases in Cagayan de Oro City involve families or close contacts of previous or ongoing cases, all were immediately isolated to contain the spread of the virus, Mayor Oscar Moreno said today.

“There is a steady increase in cases but one good thing to note is that of the 51 new Covid-19 cases (recorded as of 10 pm, April 28) about 32 of them are close contacts. What that means is that we already isolated them early on. (That said) the question is did we isolate and quarantine them on time,” Moreno said during Thursday noon’s press briefing.

In her daily case update, acting City Health Officer Dr. Lorraine Nery reported that Cagayan de Oro City recorded 51 new cases of which seven are APORs (authorized person outside of residence), one locally stranded individual (LSI), one inmate (person deprived of liberty/PDL), 32 cases with links and 10 local new or index cases.

On Tuesday, the city recorded 59 Covid-19 cases of which 28 are cases with links and 17 index cases. Both Dr. Nery and City Health Office (CHO) resident epidemiologist Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya noted that majority of the cases involved families and APORs that vacationed outside the city and northern Mindanao during the Holy Week break.

“We also need to ask if the people will cooperate with our system (our efforts to isolate any of them that had contact with confirmed cases). If not for our focused efforts to isolate the close contacts, the spread of the virus will be much worse. We hope that Northern Mindanao Medical Center will admit more cases to the CEREID (Center for Emerging-Reemerging Infectious Diseases),” Moreno said.

The newly opened CEREID facility in Barangay San Simon that was turned over by City Hall to NMMC last April 8 has 72 isolation beds and is initially being operated as a temporary treatment monitoring facility (TTMF). Mayor Moreno also emphasized that he won´t allow home quarantine for those that test positive for Covid-19.

“There are those who will insist on home quarantine even if they test positive but we cannot allow that. I hope they and their close contacts will understand and fully cooperate with us. If we allowed them then everyone will insist on home quarantine and then before you know it the virus spread even further. All positive cases will be brought to the TTMF and close contacts to city isolation units for their protection,” Moreno said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
