ABOUT 837 Covid-19 cases were recorded in Cagayan de Oro City from July 1 to Aug. 14, a number of which were re-infections of health care personnel, the City Health Office (CHO) said.

“From mid-July, we experienced an average of over 30 daily cases but recently we went down to over 20 cases so we hope we can sustain and even lower the number of cases. Of the 94 patients confined due to Covid-19, about 56 are confined in the city’s private hospitals,” said CHO medical officer Dr. Ted Yu Jr. during Monday’s Covid-19 response press briefing.

About 12 are confined at the Emerging Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases ward of Northern Mindanao Medical Center and 26 at the Center for Emerging-Reemerginv Infectious Diseases facility in Barangay San Simon, Dr. Yu said. As of 10 pm on Aug. 16, Cagayan de Oro City logged 21 new Covid-19 cases, one death, and 31 new recoveries.

“For the week ending Aug. 4, the city logged 23 daily cases, and on the week ending Aug. 11, the city averaged 24 daily cases. As of Aug. 14, the city averaged 23 cases. Hopefully, we reduce it to less than 20 cases until we lower it back to single digits just like back in May and June,” Dr. Yu said.

He said the good news is that intensive care unit bed use and mechanical ventilator use remain below double digits.

“Even with our 94 admissions of Covid-19 cases, mechanical ventilator use is zero percent while intensive care unit bed use is four percent. As cases went up, isolation bed use went up to double digits starting at 12 percent last July 24, 11 percent on July 31, 21 percent on Aug. 7, and 21 percent on Aug. 14. Despite these numbers, the city’s average health care utilization rate is pegged at eight percent,’’ Dr. Yu said.

“So you see based on our numbers, we see how vaccination is crucial in lowering the number of critical cases since most patients experience mild to moderate symptoms and there are even those who are asymptomatic. We should prioritize the vaccination and booster shots of seniors who are the most vulnerable of the population. Again, it’s important to secure not only the primary shots but booster shots,” Dr. Yu said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
