CAGAYAN de Oro compatriots Danilo Obeso and Naphtali Wabe split the point in the penultimate round, then won their respective matches in the seventh and final round to finish in a tie with 6.5 points each.

However, the Puntod resident Obeso edged out the Barangay Carmen pride Wabe by only half a point in the Bucholz tiebreaker, 32-31.5, to snare the championship trophy and the P2,500 top purse of the 5th Dev’Tal Chess League Rapid Chess tourney for Rising Stars concluded on Saturday at the Inilog Grill in Cagayan de Oro City.

Obeso survived a stiff challenge from Daniel Ancheta in his last-round assignment. While Wabe defeated Daniel Joseph Peligrino en route to secure the P1,500 runner-up prize also with a trophy.

“It was hard labor right from the go. Mga kusog ug gahi gyod ang mga players sa Region 10 hurot-hurot gyod atong kusog,” said Obeso in winning the day-long chessfest that attracted close to 100 participants with 1850 and below ratings by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Keith Adriane Ilar, a 12-year-old boy from El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental, scored 6 points alongside Edward Roperos of Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro. But Ilar claimed the third-place honor worth P1,000 plus a medal by virtue of his superior tiebreak points.

The fourth-running Roperos and the rest of the top-10 finishers namely Arnel Enrico Codera of Gingoog City, Mikhaila Labaja of Iligan City, Allan Lerasan of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte, Peligrino of Barangay Lapasan and Sara Dalagan of Tagoloan and James Pada of Jasaan also received cash prizes and medals.

Ronaldo Banaag of the organizing Brothers of Knights Mindchess and arbiter Lorenzo Cuizon of the Cagayan de Oro- Misamis Oriental Chess Association presided over the giving of cash prizes, trophies, and medals to the winners.
