WOMAN National Master Mary Joy Tan, a barrio lass from Upper Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, is an example of another grassroots talent shot into national prominence.

The 19-year-old Tan’s hard work and sacrifices, traveling to downtown Cagayan de Oro all year round for training and tournament exposure, has finally paid off.

Building confidence from her third-place finish in the women’s juniors, Tan was mean enough in dominating the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championship Semifinals.

A feat that will motivate her to do better in the 2022 National Women’s Championship Grandfinals on November 28.

“I am excited about the coming grand finals because (it’s the) first time that I will be pitting wits with the national team mainstays in a standard game,” Tan said.

“It’s a difficult field that’s why I am challenged to train harder,” added the latest protegee of Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales who decided to bring her chess talent to Far Eastern University in Manila from Liceo de Cagayan University in Cagayan de Oro City, taking Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

Tan racked up five-straight wins then split the points with WNM April Joy Claros and Francisca Largo in the last 2 rounds to amass six points in topping the women’s championship semifinals concluded last Sunday, October 30 at the
Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (Pace) headquarters in Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City.

The top-7 performers WNM Tan (6 pts), Largo (5.5 pts), WNM Claros and Ayana Nicole Usman at 5 pts, and WNM Bea Mendoza, WNM Vic Glysen Derotas and Kate Nicole Ordizo at 4.5 pts will be joined in by the Philippine team players Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, Woman International Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda, WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego, WIM Bernadette Galas and WIM Beverly Mendoza in the Nov. 28 grand finals.

“It”s two consecutive standard chess events in a week. All of these achievements would not have been made possible without the help of my coach (GM Gonzales) during our training preparation. I’m also thankful for those who showed their kind support,” Tan said.
