VIGAN, Ilocos Sur ― The neighboring City of Iligan joined Misamis Oriental in producing gold for Northern Mindanao’s cause in the ongoing 2022 Batang Pinoy National Championships.

Unlike the Governor Peter Unabia-backed Paglaum Misamis Oriental delegation that captured its first gold yesterday over at the Quirino Stadium here, Iligan’s gold mine came from its virtual sports participation in arnis or eskrima.

And more than once it produced two, courtesy of young ladies Olga Mae Saladaga and Anne Margarette Butanas that Iligan suddenly overtook Misamis Oriental in the race for gold among the so-called underdog delegations from Mindanao.

Saladaga stamped her class in the traditional double weapon for girls cadets aged seven to nine years old, beating Chrishell Mae Duran of Bacolod City and Nicole Rose Danigos of Baguio City for the podium’s top.

Butanas, on the other hand, held her ground in traditional double weapon for junior girls aged 13 to 15 years old at the expense of Nicolette Ybañez of Lapu-Lapu City, who took the silver, and the pair of bronze finishers Sharmine Faith Lazaga of Team Cebu City and Chezka Lian Borrero of Bacolod City.
