The 21-year-old Yulo carded 17.5 points in the 20-man blitz round-robin affair dubbed as “The Quest for Gold-Blood Champ” and “Training the Uprising” held on April 16 at the Activity Center of the Ayala Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

For his feat, Yulo took home the P4,000 top purse and the championship trophy.

Yulo’s fellow young campaigner Ashlanie Pandi finished in a tie with Mindanao leg executive champion Cleto ‘Bong’ Vasquez and Golden Chess Friends elementary titlist Cassey Miguel Tabamo at 15 points. But Pandi got the highest tiebreak results among the three to claim the second prize worth P2,000.

Vasquez and Tabamo received P1,500 and P1,000 each for taking the third and fourth places.

Fifth-finisher Christian James Aquino (14.5 points) was given P500, while the rest of the top 10 performers Rodney Opada (13.5 pts) Mario Arroyo (13 pts), Karl Augusto Xander Sayson (12 pts), Paul Omongos (11 pts) and Paolo Efren Castino (eight pts) settled for P200 apiece.

“It was a very successful event of the Golden Chess Friends. In order to have a chance to join the chess roulette, one needs to join the GCF VI chess competition for the month of May,” arbiter Arian Belly Calido told Gold Star Daily.

“For the monthly tourney, we also expect participants coming from Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Iligan, and Dipolog among other neighboring places of Cagayan de Oro. We’re so thankful for all the sponsors and the selfless effort of GCF founding head Ben Wabe,” added Calido.
