DIGOS City ― A 27-year-old man arrested for acts of lasciviousness was killed on Wednesday night after grabbing the firearm of a police officer while conducting a booking procedure inside Digos City police station, a police report said.

Lt. Colonel Hamlet Lerios, Digos City’s acting police chief identified the suspect as Jovanie Caballero, a resident of Barangay Dulangan, Digos City.

In the report, Lerios said the duty warrant and the duty custodial officers were processing the booking protocol for the suspect at about 6:45 pm on May 24.

Suddenly, Caballero allegedly grabbed the handgun of Corporal Jacolina wherein efforts to get hold of the gun ensued until it went off.

PSSgt. Sheila Mae Conoman, Women and Child Protection Desk (WCPD) investigator who was just nearby immediately responded upon hearing the first gun burst.

As Conoman entered the room, another shot was fired from the handgun prompting her to shoot Caballero hitting the body three times thereby neutralizing the suspect and getting rid of the threat to the life of Jacolina, the police report further said.

Caballero was rushed to Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital, which is about 500 meters from the police station, but Dr. Gilbert Alesna – the duty physician declared Caballero dead at around 7:15 pm on Wednesday.

P/Chief Master Sergeant Lorenzo Dayon, Jr. from the Davao Sur Forensic Unit was called to process the scene of the incident and recovered five empty shells of caliber 9mm pistol, one fired bullet, and three deformed slugs.

The cadaver of the suspect will be subjected to post-mortem examination at the Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital.
