CAGAYAN de Oro City will finally have its own college after the 20th City Council passed the ordinance establishing the City College of Cagayan De Oro.

City Council’s committee on education chairperson Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba thanked her colleagues for passing the ordinance.

Magtajas-Daba said like Mayor Rolando Uy, the City College has been also a “long-time dream” for Kagay-anons as it will be catering to marginalized students, especially the indigenous peoples in the city.

“The City College is a crucial step towards providing accessible and quality education for our youth who struggle to pursue their college education,” said Mayor Uy.

Earlier, the council approved an ordinance proposed by Magtajas-Daba for the establishment of a City College to be located in Barangay Dansolihon.

Uy said that it is an opportunity for those who cannot pass the city scholarship offered by the city.

“We are committed to making this dream a reality and we will strive to start the City College in Barangay Dansolihon next year,” Uy said.

Meanwhile, Mayor’s office chief of staff Sheila Lumbatan said the creation of City College is part of Uy’s executive agenda.

“This is to provide accessible and quality education for the youth who struggle to pursue their college education,” said Lumbatan.

The City College will offer courses such as agriculture, education, technical vocational skills, and others that can be chosen by those who wish to pursue their education for free.

Lumbatan also said the establishment of the City College began during Mayor Uy’s first term and will be located in Barangay Dansolihon with the aim of not becoming a competition to existing colleges and universities in Cagayan de Oro.

“Mayor (Uy) is committed to making this dream a reality,” Lumbatan said adding that his administration will strive to start the City College in the said Barangay next year.

The establishment of the City College is a significant step towards providing accessible and quality education for the youth of Cagayan de Oro, according to Lumbatan.

Last week, Mayor Uy met with members of the technical working group to present the feasibility study results for the proposed City College in Barangay Dansolihon.

Dr. Alicia Anghay, the executive director of the Local School Board, Maria Victoria Trinidad, the Vocational School Administrator at Cagayan de Oro Technical Vocational Institute (CDO TVI), and Roxanne Jul Tandang, a TWG member, were among those who attended the meeting.

Uy explained the results of their study, which included a site visit to the school location.

The TWG team presented the necessary steps for the project to commence, such as land preparation and road construction, to ensure convenience for students and teachers once the City College is operational.

Karl Hein Pios, also from CDO TVI, presented the plan.

It should be noted that the tribal community in Barangay Dansolihon donated 60 hectares of land for the City College’s construction.
