THE Cagayan de Oro fiesta came and went and what did the Cagayanon get? Hopefully the Realization 101 that a carnivore diet is more delish and sustainable as long as there’s lechon and dinuguan.

A fiesta is definitely a carnivore’s best friend, thanks to the many food items he could choose from. Aside from lechon and dinuguan, there’s lechon baka, paklay, humba, pork adobo, pata tim, pork hamonado, chicken adobo, fried chicken, pork sisig, pork barbecue, sinugbang tiyan ng baboy, roast beef, lengua estofado, kare-kare, kinilaw, sinugbang isda, crabs, shrimps, prawns. Yum!

Since Pinas has lots of fiestas, the carnivore will never run out of feasts. He should note down the dates and venues of these fiestas so there’s one for each day of the year. How about that for motivation?

Yeah, please define motivation. And, as usual, Urban Dictionary has the answer: “That thing in the back of your mind that drives you, no matter what seems to be stacked against you.” Hmmm. Is that the same as against all odds?

Inspirational stories are about surviving against all odds. The pandemic was one major obstacle that people are still recovering from. Whenever people behave differently nowadays, I wonder if it’s a side effect of Covid-19. Calm morphing into wild, peace-loving morphing into a war freak, grumpy morphing into grumpiest. Because the change can’t be blamed on old age only.

The Covid-19 virus is supposed to attack a person’s weakest spot. But being calm and peace-loving can be his strongest asset, not the weakest. Since grumpiness is a weak spot, turning grumpiest is possibly a Covid-19 side effect.

But no one has had the time to be grumpy ever since the nightlife’s major comeback last year. If that’s not your thing, you can always travel, eat out, watch Netflix, watch movies in cinemas, exercise, go shopping, learn something new, climb mountains, etc. Better that than raining on other people’s parade.

Yes, do your thing. But there are people who’d rather do your thing and have your thing.

Urban Dictionary defines “envy” as “one of the seven deadly sins. Envy is a feeling of grudging admiration for another’s talent, integrity, personality, looks, money or happiness. Envy often serves as the motivation for different acts. Envy may lead one to avoid, to dislike or to insinuate the so-called superior person is bad to make others think badly of them. They wish for the other person to not have whatever they are envious and go to extreme measures to prevent them from having it. If they can’t get it they are satisfied with trying to destroy their happiness through under-handed means.”

One of the seven deadly sins! And there’s that word again: motivation. “Motivation for different acts.” Hmmm.

There’s this certain person who’s been acting strange since last year. Always accusing other people of something, as if she’s the most perfect human being in the universe. Her complaints have been aimed at her parents, husband, siblings, in-laws, former colleagues, friends, no one has been spared. And the only way to stop her from accusing these people is for them to say yes to her requests. Anyone who says yes to her is suddenly her best friend for life. Now, can that be classified as motivation?
