NEWLY elected barangay officials of Cagayan de Oro City were reminded anew to set up their material recovery facilities (MRFs) and educate their respective constituents on segregating their household wastes.

“While other local governments lack a sanitary landfill, here in Cagayan de Oro City we have our own. But (we still fail to implement a solid waste management program because the fault) lies in the lack of public awareness on waste segregation,” said Councilor Roger Abaday, who chairs the 20th City Council’s environment committee.

During the program ‘Ang Inyong Konseho Karon’ hosted by the City Information Office, Abaday said single-use plastic products and others can be recycled while food wastes can be brought to decomposition areas for fertilizer.

He said this provides additional income for those enterprising enough to pursue collecting recycled products as an alternative livelihood.

Part of the P220 million budget for waste management goes to incentives for barangays in their waste segregation programs.

“The problem with their waste management efforts is that they still implement mixed waste collection instead of actual waste segregation. So the contracted garbage haulers are burdened (with segregating wastes),” Abaday said.

Abaday said MRFs should be set up in every barangay to encourage waste segregation.

About P50 million out of the P220 million set aside for the city’s solid waste management program will be allocated for the maintenance and operation of the city’s landfill site in Barangay Pagalungan.

Abaday said they will work with the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office to conduct an education campaign on waste segregation in the barangays. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
