IF a picture paints a thousand words, then a mural could speak a hundred thousand more.

The Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), together with Youth for Climate Justice Cagayan de Oro (Y4CJ- CdeO) collaborated with the League of Interactive Villanueva Environmental Advocates (LIVE) to commemorate Earth Day 2024.

A mural painting activity cas conducted at the Looc Elementary School in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. Student artists painted the walls of the school with the theme “Planet vs Plastics,” as well as the call for a declaration of climate emergency. Senior high school students from Villanueva National High School across the street also lent their talents in designing and painting the murals.

PMCJ supplied the painting materials, and LIVE arranged for the student’s participation as well as permission to use the school walls.

“We are happy to see young people participate in this activity to help call out the need for the government to declare a climate emergency,” said Lenin Amodala Corrales, Y4CJ-CdeO president.

“A mural on the school wall serves as a daily reminder to all students, teachers, and passersby on the climate emergency our planet is facing, and that we need to take action now.”

This mural painting activity is part of the global series of actions to commemorate Earth Day 2024. Other participating countries conducted their activities with the theme “sisters benches/walls,” painting public benches and walls with calls for action on climate change and stopping plastic pollution.
