I woke up today on the wrong side of the bed. I’m sure my brother disagrees. To him, I always wake up on the wrong side of the bed. How cruel, right? Oh, I’m used to it. In a Miriam-like tone, “I eat cruelty for breakfast.”

Honestly, I had a hard time getting up from bed this morning. I got up four times before I finally managed to rise. It felt good to linger in bed, contemplating all the excuses I could think of. However, the sheer number of tasks lurking and waiting for me overpowered my desire to stay put.

Have you ever had that feeling—of waking up feeling lazy, but not too lazy? Is this feeling of laziness in rising now psychosomatic? Come to think of it. You will your body to act. It’s a mind-over-body phenomenon. Now, I’m convinced that it’s psychosomatic.

It’s when your body feels sluggish, yet your mind is alert. Or perhaps it’s your mind that’s lethargic, telling your body to respond as told?

I even took medicine for bloatedness. Good thing I did. I think my body felt heavy with all the air.

“Honestly, Mae, do you believe that? Just admit it before your brother beats you to it. You overindulged over the weekend, and that’s as clear as the simple truth.”

Once I finally got up, I went on with my usual routine. Now, I’m finally on my way to work, faced once again with the daily hustle of navigating through the traffic maze.

Going back to the concept of “Lazy Mondays,” we grew up believing that Mondays are tough. Society ingrained this notion in us, and there are even songs and memes that keep this idea going. Perhaps it’s because Monday comes after a relaxing weekend—transitioning from a restful weekend to a workweek mode can be challenging.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s all in the mind. Maybe we should condition our minds to reverse this perception. Let’s look at Mondays as fresh starts for opportunities and challenges. It is also the time to reconnect with colleagues and clients.

Keep in mind the value of enjoying our weekends with family and friends. Avoid working on weekends unless necessary (yes, with emphasis on unless just in case my boss reads this). We call it work-life balance. Maintaining this will keep you sane no matter how crazy the world gets.
