ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR—The province and the Pagadian City officials have advocated in  protecting and preserving the environment and giving better place for living to its constituents.

The province and the city officials even rejected the proposal of a private firm- King Energy Corporation to put up a power plant in collaboration with an electric cooperative to solve the power shortage in the area.

It was learned that the King Energy proposal was rejected as it faces several opposition from the local officials and the environment groups.

Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Governor Tony Cerilles, also a former Secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said the local government plays vital role in protecting the environment and in enhancing the economy through eco-tourism and subsequently improve the lives of the people.

According to him the power shortage in Mindanao must be addressed by the national government as it greatly affects industries.

He added that the government must find ways to resolve the problem of power generation that will not come to the point of sacrificing the environment.

He even mentioned of investing and putting up renewable source of energy like hydroelectric, geothermal, solar, wind mill as well as nuclear power plants that are environmentally friendly and the power generated is perceived much cheaper.
