ISABELA CITY, Basilan— The residents in the nearby town of Maluso do not have water in their taps for the past days.

This came after suspected Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members have blown off with an improvised bomb the main pipeline from the source of the Maluso Water District (Mawad) in Barangay Upper Mahayahay in that town.

The ASG brigands, before they set off the bomb, attacked on Saturday the Mabolo patrol base manned by militiamen guarding the Mawad pipeline in Barangay Upper Mahayahay.

The ASG brigands beheaded one of the two militiamen on duty while the other survived the attack although injured.

Upper Mahayahay Barangay Chairman Ariel Castillo told the Philippines News Agency Tuesday the ASG brigands destroyed the pipeline after the Mawad management refused to pay P15,000 monthly protection money.

Castillo said the ASG brigands behind the destruction of the pipeline are led by a certain Jack, whose group is based in the nearby municipality of Sumisip.

At present, fire trucks of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) based in this city is the one providing water daily to the residents of Maluso, especially the Mawad consumers.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-Zamboanga City chapter has also brought its water tanker to this city to assist in the delivery of potable water to the residents in Maluso town.

Assorted containers can be seen lined up on the streets daily since Saturday in downtown Maluso waiting for water delivery from this city. pna
