Ms. Lourdes “Lulu” Abad, 55 years old from Awang, Opol, Misamis Oriental won the fifth place award during the recently conducted Search for Outstanding Rural Women in the country for 2015.  The six finalists were honored by the Department of Agriculture (DA) at the Philippine International Civic Center (PICC), Pasay City.

DA Undersecretary for Special Concerns Chairperson, DA-Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System Bernadette Romulo-Puyat stressed that “women play a crucial role in attaining food security and food sufficiency in the country.   In the field of agriculture, 50% of the work is delivered by the women.”

“In order to help the rural women, the DA is improving its programs and projects and activities that enable rural women to have equitable access to services that will improve their productivity and increase their income.  Economic empowerment is a basic step and vital element to fully empower women in agriculture,” Undersecretary Romulo Puyal added.

The top awardees in the recently conducted search include Luzviminda “Luz” Oropesa of Baras, Catanduanes; Nelly S. Arangali of Kinamlutan, Butuan City, Caraga; Annie M. Bajade of Tantangan, South Cotabato and Jesusa Rarangal of San Mateo, Isabela  who ranked first, second,  third  and fourth  place, respectively.   They received a cash prize of Php 100,000.00; Php 75,000.00; Php 50,000 and Php 30,000.00, respectively.

On the other hand, women achiever Cresencia M. Tuiza of Calamba, Laguna and Abad won fifth place where each received a cash prize of Php 20,000.00.  Each awardee also received a plaque of recognition and a bouquet of fresh flowers. # (MGBSta.Elena)

Cassava Situationer in Region 10 

In 2013, Northern Mindanao contributes to about 25.47% of the total national production (2,361,000 metric tons) of cassava with a volume of 601,288.33 MT. This covers an area of 25,168 hectares which translates P1.876 billion contribution to the regional economy. The province of Bukidnon is the leading producer with 397,051 MT with an area of 16,150 hectares (has). Other provinces registered the following production and area harvested: 133,832 MT for Misamis Oriental (5,610 has), 42,350 MT for Misamis Occidental (1,830 has), 24,958 MT for Lanao del Norte (1,305 has) and 3,456 MT for Camiguin (273 has).

 

Witch’s Broom which is caused by Phytoplasma candidatus asteria, is a systemic and major disease of cassava resulting to high yield loss accounting to 100% if symptoms are observed during the establishment while 40-60% if symptoms appeared five (5) months after planting until harvest.

 

Symptoms of the Disease:

§  Early symptoms appear as light purple-pigmented stiff shoot

§  Shorter internode and stunted growth

§  Discoloration and distortion of leaves turning into bouquet-like of apical portion of plant or topiary-like

§   

Areas with Occurrence and Incidence of Cassava Witch’s Broom in R-10 for 2015:

§  Bukidnon (Manolo Fortich, Baungon, Sumilao, Lantapan, Pangantucan, Don Carlos and Quezon)

§  Lanao del Norte (Kapatagan)

§  Misamis Occidental (Lopez Jaena and Calamba)

§  Misamis Oriental (Claveria, Kinoguitan and Balingasag)

 

Management of Phytoplasma

§  Selection of planting materials, use only healthy materials

§  Restrict movement of planting materials from infected areas

§  Roguing of infected plants at early stage of establishment

 

General Recommendations for Pests and Disease Control

§  Use of clean and healthy planting materials

§  Plant cassava in a well-drained soil

§  Proper sanitation by maintaining debris-free field after harvest

§  Pre-planting treatment with pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, bactericides)

§  Observe quarantine measures to avoid  introducing pests and diseases to areas where they are not found.  Pests and diseases may be readily disseminated by stem cuttings

§  Restrict movement of relative species of cassava like Jathropa from infected areas to uninfected areas
