COTABATO City– Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Toto Mangudadatu today urged former Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr to admit his fault and be sorry for the sins he committed.

Mangudadatu was reacting to news reports that the principal suspect in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre has only three months to live due to serious liver cancer.

Lawyer Salvador Panelo, Andal Sr’s lawyer, submitted a medical certificate from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) to the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

“Prognosis is currently dim as pharmacological intervention is limited. Expected life expectancy for such case is three to six months but may be shorter if the liver function will continuously and progressively deteriorate,” the certificate said.

The Ampatuan patriarch is still at the NKTI.

The certificate signed by Dr. Jade Jamias, Andal’s physician, said, “He is currently being managed as a case of advanced liver cancer with signs of decompensation.”

“I hope he will seek forgiveness to the victims’s relatives,” Mangudadatu said in a phone interview. “We are only humans, we can forgive just as God can forgive,” he added.

Mangudadatu who lost his wife Jeanelyn and two sisters in the November 23 massacre in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao, said if he feels that the apology is sincere he would even pay a visit to Andal Sr whose three other sons and several suspects have been detained since December 2009.

The provincial governor said if the elder Ampatuan is gone the case will continue against Andal “Unsay” Ampatuan Jr, Zaldy and other accused not detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City. pna
