Investigators tried at first to keep the case away from reporters because the victim was a minor but city police director Senior Supt. Romy Palgue subsequently confirmed that the incident took place, and there were three suspects.

Palgue identified two of the suspects as Rey Eda, 28, of Purok Sari-Sari, Barangay Golden Ribbon, and Archangel Milan, 30, of Balbarino Subdivision, Barangay Lower Doongan, this city. He said a third suspect has yet to be identified.

Palgue said Eda was arrested by the police, and he was charged with robbery and statutory rape. The suspect is now under detention.

Milan is at large at presstime. Police said the gangape took place at the Butuan by the Bay Park up in the wee hours of Monday. Police said the victim was with her 19-year old boyfriend when they were attacked by the suspects who had a knife. The suspects reportedly held the victim’s boyfriend with a knife, tied him up, and gagged him with a masking tape. Police said the suspects then took turns in raping the teenager in the bushes in front of her helpless boyfriend. PO3 Elsa Sumampong of the Butuan City Police Office’s Women’s Desk said the suspects then took the victims’ mobile phones, watches, and money.

Police said they suspected the men were “rugby boys.” The area where the gangape took place is frequented by criminals, police said.
