ORGANIZERS said the Cagayan de Oro rally would be “big” but only about 200 people took part in the political gathering at Gaston Park here on Saturday to “appeal” to Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for President.
The organizers earlier said they had expected thousands to participate in the Cagayan de Oro rally allegedly to “pressure” and “convince” Duterte to throw his hat into the 2016 presidential race. Former South Cotabato governor Mike Sueno, national chairman of the PDP-Laban, said the “big one” would take place in Duterte’s home city on Aug. 28.

Suena and other organizers staged the rally here as a launch pad for a “Mindanao-wide caravan” dubbed as “Run, Duterte, Run.”

Gusa barangay chairman Marlo Tabac said the 2016 elections would provide an opportunity for Mindanao to produce a President.

Tabac said Mindanao had its chance with the late vice president Emmanuel Pelaez and former senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr..

“Apan karon, dili na mahimo nga mapakyas pa gihapon kita sa ika tulong higayon sa pagpili ug Presidente nga taga Mindanao. Mao nga atong pogson nga Mayor Duterte nga modagan sa 2016,” Tabac said.

Former congresswoman Charito Plaza and former mayor Franklin Quijano came, and spoke to the crowd. Plaza said Duterte should run for President because he has “character, competence, and courage.” (nitz arancon)
