THE House committee on appropriations has approved a proposal for the national government to set aside some P700 million for the construction of a “judicial center” that would be built in place of the Hall of Justice that was destroyed by a fire in January.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s second district said the work on the planned judicial center in a five-hectare property if Taguanao, Barangay Indahag, this city, would likely begin in January next year if plans don’t miscarry. The center would house the regional and municipal courts, and other offices under the judiciary and the justice department.

“It will be like a one-stop shop,” Rodriguez said. He said the proposed budget, increased from P200 million to P700 million, was approved two weeks ago by the House committee.

Rodriguez said some P22 million was also approved for planning and a detailed program of works. He said another P25 million was also approved for rentals of spaces for the courts while the project is ongoing. He said the temporary courts require a P1.5-million budget for rentals. (shiela mae butlig)
