FORMER city councilor Aaron Neri yesterday assumed as barangay chairman of Macasandig after he received an advice from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) city director Jane Docallos.

Docallos’s advice came after Macasandig chairman Ernesto Edrote, barangay treasurer Ma. Fe Campanilla and secretary Rey Ranes Balandra stepped down on Friday. Incidentally, they were dismissed for grave misconduct by the Office of the Ombudsman based on Neri’s group’s complaint.

Neri was sworn in by Abante Mindanao Rep. Maximo Rodriguez Jr., a candidate for congressman in the city’s 2nd District, at 4:45 pm on Monday, and reported for work yesterday.

He called for a special session of the village council to confirm the appointment of Forencia Casiño as the replacement of dismissed treasurer Campanilla.

Neri said Edrote and Campanilla did not turn over records, keys, and other important things owned by Barangay Macasandig. He threatened to sue the dismissed officials.

In a three-page joint statement, Edrote, Campanilla and Balandra stated: “We yielded to the Ombudsman’s Order of dismissal because, as public officials, it is also our duty to observe the rule of law. But while we yielded, we will continue to pursue our legal remedies.”

They said they brought the case to the Court of Appeals through lawyer Dale Mordeno, and have sought a temporary restraining order and/or status quo ante order.

“These remedies are meant to restore us to status quo or our last actual and uncontested status prior to the implementation of the Ombudsman’s dismissal order,” they stated.
