ILIGAN City––Vice Mayor Ruderic Marzo stepped down as the city’s acting mayor “half-heartedly” in compliance to a temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 4 in Lanao de Norte.

Marzo stepped down a day after the mayor’s office was padlocked. By Tuesday, he relented and stepped down although his lawyers said they would appeal their case.

Marzo said he was worried that many public services would be affected because he was no longer signing checks on behalf of city hall.

It was Judge  Arthur Abundiente who issued the Dec. 4 TRO directing Marzo and Councilor Providencio Abragan Jr. to  to cease and desist from occupying the positions of acting mayor and acting vice mayor, respectively.

Abundiente also ordered the two to “revert to their former positions to which they were elected,” and allow detained Mayor Celso Regencia to perform his functions and receive his salaries and other emoluments.

One of the petitioners, lawyer Vermin Quimco, thanked those who helped in their campaign to make Marzo and Abragan step aside “in the interest of justice.”
