Police director for northern Mindanao Chief Supt. Lyndel Desquitado issued this stern warning ahead of the countdown to the new year that starts tonight.

Desquitado reminded police officers in the region that almost every New Year’s Eve, celebrations are turned into tragedies because bullets fired to the sky by revelers end up hitting innocent people.

“I’m begging, and pleading that you put down these guns, stop the violence, and understand that what goes up will come down,” he said.

He also asked civilians to help the the police monitor, and report gun owners who would fire their weapons during the revelry.

Camp Crame earlier ordered all police regional offices to lead in sealing the muzzles of officers’ firearms as part of the government’s campaign against indiscriminate and illegal discharge of guns during the holidays.

Desquitado said Camp Alagar has coordinated and intensified intelligence efforts with all local governments, including the barangays in the region, to help in identifying possible violators.

He said he the police and military would conduct “preventive patrols” to apprehend uniformed government personnel, members of law enforcement agencies, and armed civilians who would greet the new year by firing their weapons.

“May kalalagyan ang mga polis nga madakpan. Administrative and criminal charges await them. I assured them that they would be fired from police service if caught,” Desquitado said.
