THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) and other concerned government agencies have firmed up the mechanisms to intensify security of transmission power lines and steel towers as the recent bombing of steel towers affected the sustainability of power supply to major areas of the island.

This was disclosed by NGCP corporate communications officer for South Mindanao Melfrance Capulong who explained that the bombing of Tower 25 in Dec. 24 in Ramain, Lanao del Sur has not been restored due to threats.

She said a recent meeting was held between Department of Energy (DOE), National Power Corp. (Napocor), Lanao del Sur local government unit, Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) and NGCP to explore ways to restore Tower 25 but did not give details on what was discussed.

The Mindanao grid has been isolated after toppling down Tower 25. She disclosed Mindanao is facing a possible grid collapse if the situation persists since there is only one line remaining to deliver power from the Agus Hydro Complex, the Maramag-Bunawan 138-kv line.

She said no power will flow from the remaining Agus hydro facilities to south of Mindanao where the bulk of power demand is located.

Capulong said there were 16 towers that were toppled in 2015.

“As of this time, Tower 25 has not been repaired and we do not want to send people to fix it unless the area is safe,” she said.
