Rodriguez’s wife Remedios confimed that the former mayor succumbed to cardiac arrest at the Capitol University Medical City in Gusa, Cagayan de Oro, at around 1 pm on Ash Wednesday.

Rodriguez’s death came after days of hospital confinement–he was admitted to the CUMC in Feb. 3.

His widow said the former mayor had suffered four strokes, and undergone four heart bypass operations in 12 years.

Vice Mayor Erick Cañosa said the city council would hold a special session today to pass a resolution in honor of Rodriguez, and to express sympathy to his family.

Rodriguez had served Gingoog for 18 years, and was vice mayor from 1964 to 1967 when the mayor was Domingo de Lara.

He subsequently won an election as mayor in 1968 and served as the city’s leader until 1971.

In 1992, he was elected vice mayor again, and assumed as the city’s leader in 1994, following the death of mayor Arturo Lugod. He served as mayor until 2004.

“I am very proud of him. He was a good father to his sons and daughter, a good husband, and a good leader,” said Mrs. Rodriguez.

The body of the late former mayor was brought to the city yesterday. Interment would be in Cagayan de Oro on Feb. 17.
