THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court (SC) reversing its earlier decision, thus, declaring Sen. Grace Poe as qualified to run for president in the May 9 polls.

“After all that we have said and done, we did our part, we did our job. The Supreme Court, since it has ruled on the matter, we have to respect it,” said Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista.

For his part, Commissioner Arthur Lim said the Commission en banc would discuss whether or not it will file a motion for reconsideration.

“That will have to be a decision of the en banc… we will talk about it in the en banc and come up with a decision,” he added.

On the other hand, Lim congratulated Poe for getting a favorable decision from the SC but is worried over the possibility of setting a legal precedent.

“While I wish her all the best, I can only hope for the sake of our county that this is not goodbye rule of law,” the poll body official, who served as the lead counsel of the Comelec during the oral arguments on cases of the senator.

On Tuesday, the High Tribunal, voting 9-6, ruled that Poe is qualified to run for president despite questions on her being a natural-born citizen and if she has met the 10-year residency requirement.

Earlier, the poll body had cancelled the certificate of candidacy for President of the lawmaker for failure to meet the legal requirements of running for their position.
