TWENTY-SIX of 77 candidates for various positions in the city were a no-show during the   “Walk for Peace,” and signing of “covenant for secure and fair elections” in Divisoria yesterday morning.

Among those who failed to show up were mayoral candidates Vicente Emano, Felix Borres, Romer Cabildo, and Eric Saarenas, Rep. Rolando Uy of the 1st District, 2nd District congressional candidate  Chito Fernandez and Celso Balat.

Uy’s son Rainier Joaquin, a candidate for vice mayor, was also a no-show.

The activity was organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), National Police, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), Lambigit Igso-on Para sa Hini-usang Pag-uswag sa atong Katilingban (Lihuk) of Xavier University.

Through the covenant which they signed, the politicians promised to follow election rules “in order to ensure a fair, honest, peace and clean election in the City of Cagayan de Oro, as well as to prevent electoral  fraud, bribery, unnecessary spending,  vote buying, selling, and that every bonafide  candidate/s be free from any form of harassment and discrimination in upcoming  local election…”

City elections officer Palmer Palamine said, “Kon mag-violate sila sa ilang gipirmahan, they can be subjected to administrative cases, ug posibli nga ma-disqualify sila ug mag-atobang pa gayud sa criminal case depende sa violation  nga ilang nahimo.”

A similar activity was held in neighborinbg Gingoog City on Monday.

The Gingoog covenant was signed by politicians led by Mayor Marie Guingona, Vice Mayor Erick Cañosa.

Vice mayoral candidates provincial board member Jabi Bernaldez and former mayor Ruth Guingona, and 21 candidates for council seats also signed the covenant. (nitz arancon)
