ILIGAN City–A senator thinks the case against detained Mayor Celso Regencia was railroaded even as he promised to help the embattled politician, former congressman Alipio Badelles said yesterday.

Badelles said Sen. Francis Escudero, a lawyer, said this when he visited Regencia in jail here on Wednesday.

Regencia has been detained in connection with a case that stemmed from the ambush of Rep. Vicente Belmonte Jr. near the Laguindingan airport in December 2014. The mayor is accused of masterminding the attack.

Badelles said Escudero opined that “due process was not applied” in the case of Regencia who has strongly denied involvement in the Laguindingan ambush.

Badelles said Regencia’s case went straight of the Department of Justice (DOJ) instead on passing the provincial prosecutor’s office and regional prosecutor’s office.
