BUTUAN City–The Commission on Elections (Comelec) started removing hundreds of campaign posters, billboards, and other electionelated materials in the city and Agusan del Norte in violation of rules.

The Comelec noted violations of the rule on sizes, and misplacement.

Lawyers Ernie Palanan and Samuel Rollo, provincial and city elections officer, respectively, led a team that included firemen, police officers, soldiers, Department of Public Works and Highways workers, and volunteers in carrying out “Oplan Baklas.”

They warned that the candidates whose campaign materials were removed face disqualification charges.

Palanan said the Comelec has sent letters  and even called up various political groups to remind them about the election rules, and to advise them to take down their campaign materials. He said the Comelec was merely ignored.

“Candidates who are clearly violating election laws will be charged. We will inform the law department of the Comelec central office about the violations,” Palanan said.

Palanan said politicians should take this seriously because if found guilty, they could be barred from running for public office again, stripped of their right to vote, and even imprisoned from two to six years.
