Rep. Peter Unabia of Misamis Oriental’s 1st District, chairman of the LP in Misamis Oriental, declared during a jampacked crowd at the Gingoog City Grandstand on Friday that he was behind the campaign of Vice Mayor Erick Cañosa to unseat reelectionist Mayor Marie Guingona.

Cañosa is the candidate of the Padayon Pilipino headed in the province by Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano while Guingona is a sister of LP stalwart Sen. Teofisto Guingona III. The mayor’s running mate is her mother Ruthie, a former governor of the province and an ex-mayor of Gingoog.

“Starting today until the end of the campaign period, I support him (Cañosa),” Unabia declared during the rally.”

The congressman also pledged support for candidates under Cañosa’s group, including provincial board member Jabi Bernaldez who is running for vice mayor.

Unabia’s announcement has been seen to change the political landscape in the province, particularly in the eastern part which has long been a known bailiwick of the Guingona family because of their political hold on voteich Gingoog.

But in an interview weeks ago, Cañosa alleged that he and his group met with Sen. Guingona before he filed his certificate of candidacy for mayor. He also alleged that the Guingona siblings were not in good terms.

“Dili colors sa politika ang atong lantawon kun dili ang tinood nga tawo nga makahatag ug kalambuan sa dakbayan sa Gingoog,” said Unabia.
