NEWLY installed police director for northern Mindanao Chief Supt. Jose Gentiles yesterday called for unity even as he hinted of a fresh crackdown on criminal activities in the region.

Speaking during the turnover of command at Camp Alagar, Gentiles asked city, town and provincial police offices to put their act together toward one common goal: crime prevention and reduction in Region 10.

He said it would be a difficult challenge for him to surpass the record of his predecessor, Chief Supt. Lyndel Desquitado, who has received his assignment at Camp Crame ahead of his retirement.

“I will be consulting all my field commanders so that we could come up with a unified approach in fighting crime,” Gentiles said.

He said he would also ask the Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental police offices to update him about the abduction of three police officers by the members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

Camp Alagar spokesman Supt. Surki Sereñas said the reason for Desquitado’s transfer remains unclear to them.

“Wala gyud ta’y rason o hinungdan sa transfer. Basta mituman lang ta sa sugo sa higher headquarters,” he said.

Sereñas said the order came from Police Director General Ricardo Marquez even as he dismissed insinuations that it had something to do with politics.

“Dili nato ma-question ang wisdom sa atong Chief PNP og duna man gani’y rason ang new police director ra gyud ang nakahibalo. Normal ra man siguro kini nga movement,” he said.
