BUTUAN City – Replica of ancient Balangay boats marked the formal launching of the 29th Balanghay Festival at Guingona Park of this city last May 3.

The month long celebration aims to commemorate the coming of the early migrants that settled in Butuan on board the Balangay boats.

Balangay was one of the first native word the Spaniards learned in the Philippines when Anotonio Pigafetta anchored down in Butuan shores to parley with the ruler of Limasawa.

The annual month long-celebration was meant to commemorate the coming of the early migrants that settled Butuan area on board the Balangay boats that were considered ancient.

Meanwhile, Butuan city Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. released dozens of balloons into the air marking the launching of programs.

Amante said Balanghai Festival is not only about celebrating the history of the city, but also its culture and tradition of the people.

Many city wide activities are expected this includes a city wide art show, several dance troops in the Balanghai parade which will reenact the arrival of the Balangay ships from different neighboring tribes and the Search for Mutya Hong Butuan 2016.
