MISAMIS Oriental Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez yesterday called for the postponement of the barangay and youth elections scheduled this October.
Pelaez said President-elect Rodrigo Duterte should consider the postponement so as to give communities, divided as a result of the May elections, time to heal.
He said he would push for the passage of a resolution by the provincial board to formally call for the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections when the next provincial legislature meets on July 4.
“Dili maayo paminawon nga mag-election na usab ang barangay ug SK nga wala pa gani mapali ang mga sakit nga gibati sa mga napilding kandidato, niadtong national ug local elections sa May 9,” Pelaez pointed out.
He said local officials should be focusing more on their work now rather than on elections.
“I feel that we just have too many elections… It’s divisive, it’s expensive, and it seems it’s a distraction,” said Pelaez.
He said he would also ask other provincial boards elsewhere to pass similar resolutions addressed to Duterte.
