There will be no extension of the July 30 deadline of the voter registration period for the October 31 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, City Commission on Election Supervisor Atty. Gina Luna Zayas-Sabio said over the weekend.

“For the last five days, the number of persons who wanted to avail the registration increases but this will only up to this day (Saturday). No extension is allowed by the Comelec central office in Manila,” she said.

Zayas-Sabio said they already reached their target of 720 registrants per day from July 15 to July 27 but on the last three days Comelec Cagayan de Oro office increased their target number of registrants to 1,000.

“(The extension) would impact our preparation of the Project of Precincts (PoP0 for the elections,” she pointed out. In PoP, the Comelec will identify which voters or Board of Election Inspectors assigned to particular polling precincts in 80 urban and rural barangays in the city.

Sabio observed that in the last days of the registration, the number of registrants coming from different barangays in the city have increased.

Ang uban mahilig gyud og festive mode and waited for the last minute before (registering),” she said.

She said most of those who took advantage of the registration period were deactivated voters.

“If you failed to vote in the Barangay Elections of 2013 and in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections, you will not be able to vote in the coming Barangay and SK elections unless you have reactivated,” she said.

Comelec central office database shows that a total of 2,284,743 voters of the city were deactivated. Of this figure, only 83,717 voters sought reactivation in the first nine days of the registration period.

CDO Comelec office has registered more than 5,000 deactivated voters and new registrants at Robinson extension office for the 15-days registration alone.

Wala lang mi mi-cater karon og transfer and mostly deactivated and change status among gi-atiman,” Zayas-Sabio said.
