THE Optical Media Board (OMB) and the police seized some P77 million worth of pirated digital video discs and compact discs during a surprise raid of stalls in the city hallun Cogon market on Tuesday night.

The OMB representatives were backed by members of the National Police’s Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) and Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

At least 34 stalls in the local government-owned market were raided by authorities led by OMB operations chief Joseph Arnaldo.

Arnaldo said the seized discs were brought to Camp Alagar, and would be shipped to Metro Manila where all these would be destroyed.

Some 371 sacks of pirated discs were hauled off from stalls along the perimeters and inside the city’s busiest market. Many of the stalls, ironically, were near Police Station 2.

Senior Insp. Melchor Annaway said the Cogon raid resulted in the biggest haul of pirated discs so far in the country this year.

Some 100 police officers, including members of the  Cogon police under Chief Insp. Gilbert Rollen, took part in the raid.

Authorities said many of the pirated discs came from China and others were locally made.

Arnaldo said the OMB would file cases against erring stall owners for violation of RA 9239.
