BURGERS can be a man’s best friend. Make sure, though, it’s spelled correctly–changing one letter is enough to give it a whole new meaning which incidentally can be about a hole. Say, replace the first “r” with “g” and it morphs to bugger. Not exactly a bad word in this age of “Fifty Shades Darker.”

A friend was craving for burgers, thus, it was burgers for dinner on Friday night at this new burger branch that shares rent with a resto known for its yummy halo-halo. For appetizer, there was fried veggie lumpia with vinegar and garlic as dip.

Food cravings should be met otherwise you’ll be making up for unmet cravings through other food items which will only add pounds without sating you. Better gain weight through yummy means rather than other means, right?

So, if you want to watch “Fifty Shades Darker” but convinced to watch “The Lego Batman Movie” instead, not much difference there—the characters in both movies wear costumes. Unless “Darker” is not into BDSM anymore. BDSM? The ever reliable—hehe—Wikipedia says it’s short for “B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism).”

Other movies which may attract your curiosity are “John Wick: Chapter 2,” “I’m Drunk, I Love You,” and “Sakaling Hindi Makarating.”

Watching movies may lead you to the right path and they do serve as a recess in between life’s challenges. They help you see a life different from your own, to make you realize that you’re not alone after all—each person is going through the eye of a needle at some point in his life.

Reading the news lately is enough for you to crave for a recess. Kana bang, Puede ko tulog balik? Reading a book while in bed on a rainy day—perfect. Last Saturday, there was Typhoon Bising to gising us to the reality of the threat of floods again. We were going to have a Rotary mid-year evaluation meeting with the district governor that night and the determination hovering overhead was to attend that meeting, bahala na si Batman with Bising.

Rotary has remained my priority, especially with the district’s newsletters that I have to finish, since I always remember its motto, “Service Above Self.” Most of the time I do forget about I, me and myself, that’s why family and friends continue to remind me to please take care of myself first. And that’s the reason I write—this is my way of taking care of me. This is my recess.

Watching movies is another form of recess. Eating is also a great way to relax but too much of it results to weight gain, and once a friend starts noticing that, I’m back to the diet again the morning after the burger dinner which had fried veggie lumpia as appetizer and halo-halo as dessert. Yum!

But who has the time to watch movies? When your Facebook news feed requires a 24/7 neverending watching of live news coverage? You’re hooked for life. US President Donald Trump signs a new document, and that will elicit another set of reactions again. His travel ban is temporarily stopped and there’s the non-American-citizen Pinoy in the US wondering if he should go back home now or wait for his state’s governor or city’s mayor to defy Trump’s orders.

All these are supposedly blown out of proportion by the media. That Trump only wants to protect his country from undesirables. That former US President Barack Obama did much harm to the US, and what Trump is doing is to undo Obama’s mistakes. One look, and it’s PR pa more. PR as in public relations. Whose PR can you believe on this one?

Diets also have their respective PR machineries, but the best diet for you is the one that works for you. Same for movies—no one can force me to watch a horror film, even if it stars Brad Pitt. Wait, I did watch “Interview with the Vampire.” Was that horror?

Well, reality is scarier than horror movies. Think of all the reality you have survived so far. Scary, aren’t they? But you survived. With a little help from writing about burgers, diets, and movies.
