MEMBERS of the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) of Misamis Oriental attended a training on Nutrition in Emergencies sponsored by the National Nutrition Council X at Apple Tree Resort and Hotel on Feb. 21-23.
Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano, being the chair of the PNC, issued an Executive Order GYVBE 2016-011 “Reorganization of the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Misamis Oriental and their Duties and Responsibilities.” This is in response to adverse events and frequently experienced disasters affecting the country, the characteristics and stages of emergencies as well as the different interventions and developments in nutrition in emergencies.
Ms. Girlie Barcenas, the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) of Misamis Oriental ensures the participation of the members of PNC or their official representatives during the said training. For their participation in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities during disasters affecting the province. The PN shall serve as the Provincial Nutrition Custer on Nutrition Management in Emergencies and Disasters.
According to Mr. Praeen Agrawal, Country Director of World Food Programme (WFP) Philippines, that natural and human-induced disasters are the leading causes of hunger and malnutrition. Severe food shortages and disease epidemics during emergencies often leave many people vulnerable to malnutrition, illness, and death, making safeguarding the nutritional status of vulnerable groups during emergencies crucial. Food remains the central fomr of response to nutritionelated concerns in emergencies. (pr)
