Carandang said vital public installations were being secured by government troops.

In Misamis Oriental, security patrols have been ordered in the towns of Medina, Talisayan, Claveria, Balingasag, and Gingoog City where rebels were active.

Meanwhile, Capt. Joe Patrick Martinez, spokesman of the 4th Infantry Division, laughed off the call for a suspension of military operations against the NPA.

“How can the government suspend its operations when the NPA keeps on committing atrocities?” Martinez asked rhetorically.

He said the NPA should also stop seeking a temporary ceasefire just to free its captives.

“They can just leave  their captives anywhere, anytime,” he said. (nitz arancon)
