TRAFFIC aides had their hands full yesterday as motorists got caught in “abnormal” vehicular flows as a result of the grand opening of SM CDO Downtown Priemier, now the city’s biggest mall.

The traffic became “heavy” on CM Recto Avenue and Osmeña Street  as soon as the new malll opened its doors at around 10 am but it was “manageable,” Nonito  Oclarit, RTA’s chief.

Oclarit said the vehicular traffic build-up then had a domino effect all the way to the Agora Road junction and Don Apolinar Velez Street.

But by 11 am, he said, the traffic flows on CM Recto Avenue, Osmeña Street up to the Cogon  and Gaabucayan Street slightly improved.

Oclarit said the flow of vehicular traffic slowed down because of pedestrians criss-crossing the roads near the new mall

By 12 noon, Oclarit said, the vehicular traffic in the area began to build up again, resulting in traffic jams on CM Recto Avenue and Osmena Street.

“Balos-balos lang  ang heavy traffic sa CM Recto ug Osmeña sigon sa among assessment,” said Oclarit, calling the situation “abnormal.”

He said the RTA expects the “abnormal” traffic situation to last until next week.

Atong gitahasan ang atong mga  traffic enforcers nga dili gyud nila biya-an ang maong lugar,” Oclarit said. (nitz arancon)
