ILIGAN City–City hall called off the traditional Independence Day parade and activities at the city’s public plaza apparently because of security concerns.

But local officials commemorated Independence Day at the Anahaw Amphitheater,  Buhanginan Hills at the city hall grounds.

There, as Mayor Celso Regencia delivered his Independence Day message, military choppers comong from and bound to strife-torn Marawi could be heard from time to time over the city’s skyline.

Councilor Sorilie Baczarpa said officials had prepared for an Independence Day parade around the city  and ceremonies at the city public plaza in downtown Iligan until city hall decided to cancel the activities there.

But on a speech, Regencia called on Iliganons not to be overwhelmed by  fear in the face of the grave threats to the city’s security and peace and order situation posed by the terrorist Maute Group.

“We must be vigilant,” he said.
