THE lawyer of former Marawi mayor Fahad Salic cried foul over the way a panel of prosecutors handled inquest proceedings at Camp Evangelista, alleging that defense counsels were prevented from speaking.

Lawyer Dale Bryan Mordeno said the proceedings were one-sided against Salic and other suspects being linked to the Marawi siege.

Mordeno said the Department of Justice (DOJ) dominated the inquest proceedings against the first nine respondents, including Salic.

“We (lawyers) were told that we cannot question, and that we cannot raise objections,” Mordeno said. “Wala tanan kay ang ila, inquest ra gyud.”

He said prosecutors handled the inquest proceedings differently, and without regard for civil rights of the accused.

“Sa regular inquest, ang accused pangotan-on man sa prosecutor kon mo-waive ba siya sa iyang right to be detained kon gusto siya nga mo-submit sa counter affidavit sa kaso nga  gipasaka batok niya,” Mordeno said.

Earlier, Mordeno and Salic’s daughter alleged that authorities were practically holding the former mayor excommunicado, depriving him of his right to see his family and even choose and consult his lawyer.
