The military said members of Biff positioned their forces along the roadside, and they tried to get near the vehicle but soldiers managed to fire back, preventing them from moving closer.

Military authorities said the Biff fighters fled after sensing that reinforcements for the soldiers from nearby military detachments and the police were coming.

Authorities said the attack started with a bomb exploded by the Biff, and then the exchange of firepower followed.

Barangay officials corroborated the military claim that the Biff was responsible for the ambush.

Authorities identified the wounded as Pfcs. Kevenino Abines, Jayson Abat, Crisanto Lemente, Jennil Distura, Jemuel Enocito, and corporals Kevin John Burlatos, Marlon Abrenilla, Raymund Rosare and Rommel Besus.

Police said the ambush took place meters from a military post in Barangay Zapakan.
